BATTERIES
Every vehicle requires a battery to store the excess energy provided by the alternator. This allows for the energy to be used on demand, whether it be starting the engine, headlights, wipers, or radio.
Batteries have a finite lifespan, and an indication that the battery is in need of replacing is a slow or non-existent crank of the engine, or multiple clicks when trying to start the vehicle.
ALTERNATORS
The alternator is the heart of the charging system of all vehicles, converting the rotational energy of the engine to electrical power. This is delivered to the battery to ensure the vehicle has sufficient power to operate the engine and power ancillaries like your lights and radio.
An alternator that is not operating correctly will flash up a battery light on the dashboard, and lead to total loss of power - resulting in the vehicle cutting out.
STARTER MOTORS
In the 20th century, to start an engine it was necessary to crank the motor over by hand. Nowadays, we use a starter motor which rotates the engine thereby initiating operation under its own power.
Symptoms of a faulty starter motor include: no response when the key is turned, clicking, slow or no cranking of the engine or excess noise.
